Chris Roof has been a teacher of Health and Physical Education for 20 years. He is currently in his 15th year as Head Baseball Coach at his Alma Mater, Governor Livingston High School, in Berkeley Heights. Coach Roof is also on the coaching staff for both the NJ State Senior All Star Game (Northwest) and the Union/Essex County Underclass All Star Game. During the 2017 season, Roof’s Governor Livingston Baseball program was ranked #1 in NJ for the first time in school history and was also ranked Nationally during the season by USA Today.
Prior to being Head Coach at GL, Chris was Head Baseball Coach at Millburn High School from 2001-2003, Varsity Assistant Coach at Millburn in 2000, and Varsity Assistant at GL 1997-1999. As a Varsity Assistant, Coach Roof was a part of a state championship at GL in 1999. Through his tenure as Head Baseball Coach, Chris has earned 347 career victories. He's been named Coach of the Year 13 times, including New Jersey State Baseball Coach of the Year in 2011.
Chris has an impressive list of achievements as a High School Baseball Head Coach including:
- 2 time New Jersey Group 2 State Champions (2011 & 2015)
- 5 time NJ State Sectional Champions (2002, 2006, 2011, 2015 & 2017)
- 3 time Conference Champions (2005, 2015 & 2017)
- Finished #6 in NJ in 2011 - Won the Union County Tournament Championship (2016)
- Union County Tournament Finalist (2007, 2011, 2014, 2015)
With his guidance, Coach Roof has sent 53 players on to play in college, 17 of them in Division 1. Two of Coach Roof’s former players at GL have go on to play Professional Baseball:
Keith Skinner with the Yankees and Joey Graziano with the Rays.
In his years as a player himself, Chris played 4 years of varsity baseball at Governor Livingston High School for Coach Bill Howard from 1989-1992. During his time there, he achieved All State, All County, and All Conference from 1990-1992. He was also named to the North/South Senior All Star Game in 1992. Roof moved on to play at Montclair State University for Coach Norm Schoenig from 1993-1996. In 1993, Chris won a National Championship with MSU and achieved the NJAC Rookie of the Year Award. He was a 2 time 1st team All Mid-Atlantic Region and was named Team Captain for Montclair State in 1996.
