Coach Scott Illiano teaches Special Education and was recently named as Head Baseball Coach at Wayne Hills High School. In 2017, he was the Head Coach at James Caldwell High School where he led the Chiefs to a 19-8 record and a share of the SEC Liberty Division Championship. During the 2016 season, he served as an Assistant Coach at Delbarton High School where he was assigned to handle the pitching staff en route to winning the NJAC Conference Championship.
Prior to 2016, Illiano served as the Head Baseball Coach at West Essex High School for twenty seasons from 1996 - 2015. Before beginning his tenure as Head Coach, Illiano served as the West Essex Assistant Coach for two seasons, and was also a West Essex Assistant Hockey Coach for eighteen seasons.
During his tenure at West Essex, Illiano coached the Knights to 316 wins. In 2014, the Knights reached the NJSIAA State Section finals for the fourth time in six seasons. In 2011, the Knights won their third consecutive North II Group II Section State Championship, their second consecutive SEC Conference championship and reached the Group II state finals for the second year in a row.
In 2010, West Essex completed a rare “triple crown” sweep while winning the SEC Conference, The Greater Newark Tournament, and the overall Group II State Championships as they set a record for school wins with a 28-3 record. For the season they were awarded the Star-Ledger Top 20 trophy as the #1 ranked team in New Jersey. USA Today ranked them 5th in the Northeast and Perfect Game ranked them 69th in the nation.
For his efforts Illiano was chosen as the Star-Ledger and NJSCA New Jersey State Coach of the Year, and the NFHS Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
From 2008-2014, Illiano served as the pitching coach for the Northwest squad in the NJSIAA Senior All Star Game and beginning in 2015, he was chosen as a Co-Head Coach for the Northwest section, a position he continues to occupy today. From 2010-2015, he was also as a member of the Essex County coaching staff for the Annual Essex vs. Union Underclass Showcase held at Kean University.
In 2009, West Essex captured the North Jersey Section II Group II State Championship, and earned the prestigious distinction of Essex County "Team of the Year" by the The Star-Ledger. For his efforts, Illiano was chosen as Sideline Chatter Essex County "Coach of the Year" for the second time in four seasons.
In 2006, Illiano coached the Knights to their first ever Greater Newark Tournament Championship while as a # 15 seed, they defeated # 1 seed and nationally ranked Seton Hall Prep in the finals. He was chosen Essex County "Coach of the Year" by both the The Star-Ledger and Sideline Chatter, while West Essex was named Essex County "Team of the Year" by Sideline Chatter. In 2000, he was selected as the head coach for the North Jersey Section II squad in The Top 100 Senior All Star Game held at Princeton University. As an experienced clinician, Illiano has frequently appeared as a speaker at the Division One Sports Baseball Coaches Youth Baseball Clinic, as well as college classes at both William Paterson University and Montclair State University.
An All Colonial Hills Conference, All Area, and All State Group I first baseman at Cedar Grove High School in 1989, Illiano also served as Co-Captain of the Ramapo College baseball team in 1993. In 2008, he earned a Master's in Educational Leadership (Administration and Supervision) at Montclair State University. In 2015, he was appointed as a member of the NJSCA Executive Committee for the sport of baseball.
